Santiniketan (sometimes spelled Shantiniketan) or Abode of Peace is located approximately 100 miles north of Kolkata (Calcutta). Here, the great Indian poet and philosopher - who was also the first Indian to win a Nobel prize - Rabindranath Tagore founded an unique educational institution known as Visva-Bharati. Visva-Bharati later became an university funded by the Central Government of India.
Visva-Bharati is not just another academic institution. It is a cultural institution. Aside from regular academia, Visva-Bharati is a center for learning fine arts and performing arts such as painting, sculpture, music, and dancing. Many of the classes in Santiniketan are still held outdoors, under the shade of trees, the way Tagore started it about 100 years ago! Visiting Santiniketan and Sriniketan (part of Visva-Bharati devoted to rural development) can give the visitor an unique experience.
Tagore's original ancestral home was in Jorasanko, Calcutta. But he used to spend a lot of time in Santiniketan after a school was founded there in 1901. A Tagore museum called Rabindrasadan (a.k.a. Bichitra) located inside the compound of Uttarayan is a must see if you ever visit Santiniketan. Inside Uttarayan, there are five buildings named Udayan, Konarka, Shyamali, Punashcha, and Udichi. Tagore lived in all of them.
The following is a photo tour of Santiniketan. A lot more of my photos of Santiniketan can be seen on my Flickr Santiniketan album. These pictures are all taken by me and I own the copyright of each one of them. If you want to use any of these photos online or for print media, please contact me for terms. I can supply you better qualty photos optimized either for print media or for online use.
Please note that due to security reasons, photography is strictly prohibited within the compound of Uttarayan. For this reason, I am unble to post any picture of Uttarayan on this page. It is indeed a shame.
Recently, Indian TV Doordarshan produced a series (30 in all) of TV shows called Gitanjali to pay tribute to India's most well known poet and thinker Rabindranath Tagore. It is an excellent production. If you want to know more about Tagore and his Santiniketan I strongly recommend this program. It is in Hindi. If you are interested, click on this link to find a linked list of all 30 episodes.
