India is a land of varied cultures. Most things are different when you move from state to state - the language, food, clothing, customs - practically everything. And again there are religious differences from region to region. Some areas are predominantly Hindu, other areas are predominantly Muslim, and so on. As a result, one can see vast differences in festivities, celebrations, observances, and ways of doing things in different parts of the country.

This page is about the different ways the marriages are solemnized in different parts of the country. I am not going to describe how the marriages actually take place. This page is about the bridal dresses and bridal makeups in different parts of the country as depicted on Indian postage stamps. So let me jump right into the topic.

The following set of four stamps were issued in 1980, showing Indian brides from the four corners of the country, namely Kashmir (north), Tamil Nadu (south), Rajasthan (west), and West Bengal (east). While they all look elegant, there are differences in their makeup, ornaments, and their clothing. All these differences have been described by an expert in a different site. Click on any stamp, and you will come to the site where you can read an expert's description of these brides from four different corners of the country.

Basically in every region of India, women wear elaborate makeup and jewelry, and wear regional bridal dresses on their wedding day. They all look very different from region to region, and yet you can tell that this is a bride going to get married or just married. Indian marriages are solemnized in a very different way than the Western marriages. The best way to experience it is to get invited by an Indian friend to attend an Indian wedding!
