As I have already mentioned in the previous chapter on transferring data, Windows Easy Transfer cannot transfer your programs from your old computer to your new computer. You have to re-install them manually in the new computer.

But before you do so, you need to keep a few things in mind.

  • Some of the programs you had been using in your old computer may not work under Windows 8.1. Go to the program manufacturer's website to see if that program (and version) is compatible with Windows 8.1. If not, an updated version may be available.

  • Some of the programs you had been using with your older version of Windows may not be needed at all as many FREE apps are available from the Microsoft Store for doing everyday tasks like downloading photos and video clips from your camera to your computer, simple zipping/unzipping tasks, simple photo editing and photo organizing, basic video editing, and so forth. Just browse or search in Microsoft Store. Free programs can be installed in your Windows 8.1 computer with one single click on its name. All the programs currently available in the Microsoft Store are compatible with Windows 8.1 and Microsoft is regularly adding new progams in its store inventory.
  • Browse in Microsoft Store to discover new and intersting programs that you never knew existed to make many of your tasks a lot simpler. Some of them may be great for entertainment and recreation. Some are useful for work. Again, many of the apps are available from the Microsoft Store for free!
  • This may be a good time to upgrade your old apps. For example, I was using Ulead PhotoImpact 7 and Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 for years with my Windows XP computer for photo editing and video editing respectively and I was quite happy with them. After I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I discovered none of them are compatible with the new operating system. I realized that now I not only have the latest operating system, I also have a new computer with a lot more resources (processor, RAM. hard disk space, graphic card, monitor quality, etc.) So I upgraded my photo editing program to Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 and my video editing program to Corel VideoStudio Pro X6! You can do similar things too.
